It’s the primary season and with no clear-cut favorite so early in the race, everyone is the subject of attacks from rivals and Mitt Romney has not been spared. While John McCain has once again been dogged by questionable mailings and push polls in South Carolina, Mitt has been victimized just as badly in the past 48 hours by those who would seek to unfairly paint him as beholden to Washington insiders.
Glenn Johnson, a reporter for the Associated Press, attacked Romney in a hatchet piece widely published in the mainstream media. In the article Johnson unfairly an inaccurately pointed out that Romney has a number of Washington insiders and lobbyists running his campaign. As Mitt plainly stated, "I don’t have lobbyists running my campaign", but Johnson remained unconvinced so Romney cleverly invited him to "Listen to my words".
As you can imagine, Mitt Romney has legions of advisors as he runs toward the White House. Amongst others, Ron Kaufman, former Rep. Vin Weber and former Sen. Jim Talent give advice to the Romney campaign. He also gets help from several others who have close ties to Washington, the RNC and/or are registered lobbyists.
Time for the truth:
These people are not "running the campaign" – they are advisors and a few of them are even unpaid.
Although some may be employed by lobbying firms, they aren’t doing the bidding of their clients. As Mitt points out, "I don't have lobbyists at my elbows that are arguing for one industry or another industry, and I do not have favors I have to repay to people who have been in Washington for years nor scores I have to settle"
Once again, people are trying to hold Mitt Romney accountable for the private matters of the people around him. Just as he can’t be held accountable for his lawn care company hiring illegal aliens, he can’t be held accountable for the $176,000 Ron Kaufman received last year from Citgo. Mitt Romney is no more beholden to Venezuelan oil producers than he is an employer of illegal aliens – to suggest otherwise is crazy.
Time for the media to stop their unfounded attacks on Mitt – he’s a Washington outsider who will bring change!
Romney's vision of a Washington that "engages" certain sectors of the economy, a Washington that regulates industrial standards and health care was a message Michigan could get behind. We can only hope he reaches out to ailing sectors in the economy all over the country with this message, from agriculture in South Carolina to high-tech in California.
